At least 13 Turkish-backed militants were killed or wounded in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib on May 7 in a series of FPV suicide drone strikes carried out by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

At least eight drone strikes targeted militant positions in the outskirts of the town of Kabashin in the western Aleppo countryside.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based pro-opposition group, said that the strikes killed three militants of the Turkish-backed Sham Legion, including a field commander, and wounded ten others. The commander was later identified by activists as Ali Himo, also known as Abu Hilal.

The Sham Legion is Turkey’s main proxy in Greater Idlib and a close ally of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of the group.

The faction is also a part of the Syrian National Army, an umbrella group that rules over Turkish-occupied areas in northern and eastern Syria.

The SAA intensified strikes on Greater Idlib in recent months in cooperation with Russian forces in the country in response to ceasefire violations by HTS and its allies, including the Sham Legion. The ceasefire in the region was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than four years ago.

The use of FPV suicide drones by the SAA was first documented last year. Syria reportedly received support from Russia, who gained vast experience in mass producing and operating this type of drones following the start of the special military operation in Ukraine. The rate of drone strikes on Greater Idlib has been steadily increasing.
