Algeria has showcased the Russian-made S-400 long-range air defense systems for the first time during drills held earlier in the week, Sputnik reported on May 31, citing a video released by the Algerian Ministry of Defense.
The country test-fired the advanced system in the course of the drills, codenamed “Steadfastness 2025,” intercepting at least one aerial target.
Reports of Algeria receiving the S-400 first appeared in 2021, although they were not confirmed by the country or Russia. This was not however unusual, as the country is known for keeping its military purchases under tight wraps.
The S-400 was developed by Russia’s air defense giant NPO Almaz to counter all sorts of aerial targets, from fighter jets to ballistic missiles.
The system employs several types of radars, like the 91N6E, 92N6E and 96L6E2, with a reported maximum detection range of up to 600 kilometers.
In addition, the system can fire a wide variety of missiles to deal with different types of threats, including the 9M96E2 with a range of 120 kilometers, 48N6E2 with a range of 200 kilometers, 48N6E3 with a range of 240 kilometers and 40N6E which can engage targets as far as 380 kilometers. The missile fired by the Algerian military during the recent drills was very likely the 48N6E2 or 48N6E3.
Some reports from Algerian media suggest that the country is operating eight S-400 regiments, each with 12 transporter erector launchers.
This is however nearly impossible to verify, especially that the Algerian military is also reported to be operating eight regiments of the older, yet very capable, S-300PMU2 long-range air defense system.
Besides Algeria, Russia has already exported the S-400 to China, India and Turkey. The Indian military praised the system after the recent confrontation with Pakistan, crediting it with foiling several drone and missile attacks. Talks on a new S-400 deal for India are reportedly underway.
All in all, the S-400 is without a doubt a very powerful addition to Algeria’s air defense network, which is solely reliant on Soviet and Russian systems. The multi-layered network can be considered one of the most advanced in North Africa and the Middle East.

the war in ukraine is also a showcase of russian military technology and the utter failure of months of drone offensive of kiev is quite the demonstration of its air defense prowess.

algeria should apologize and compensate for shooting down a malian drone earlier this year. that was an unjustified aggression and practical support for terrorist and separatist groups. i expected better behavior from algeria.
quote from a humanitarian organisation ” a malian drone attack killed 13 civilians including 7 children and a mother in gao around the 17th of march” -i expected better behavior from gao -no wonder algeria shot it down !
