One of the strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28 morning hit a girls’ elementary school in the southern city of Minab, killing 57 people, including students, and wounding more than 60 others.
The official Islamic Republic News Agency, which quoted Mohammad Radmehr, a city official, as saying that Israel “directly attacked” the school.
The official said that 170 students were in the facility when the strike happened, so there was a possibility that the death toll would rise again as the rescue operation was still under way. A video from the scene of the strike shows first responders and relatives of the students going through the rubble to search for survivors.
Iranian state media are yet to provide any details on how many people have been killed since the start of the American-Israeli attack, and due to the current internet blackout in the Islamic Republic details are scarce.
The U.S. military has not yet provided any details about its ongoing attack on Iran. However, the Israeli military said in a very short statement that it struck hundreds of targets in the Western region of the Islamic Republic, including missile launchers.
Videos released by the Israeli Air Force show several missile launchers getting hit, in addition to what appears to be an air defense site.
In another statement, the Israeli military said that it hit several sites “where senior officials in Iran’s political-security echelon had gathered.”
Hebrew media reports said that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, President Masoud Pezeshkian, and the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Gen. Mohammad Pakpour, were all targeted. One report by Channel 12 even said that Israel assesses that the strikes achieved “very high success” in the goal of eliminating the Iranian leadership.
Satellite imagery published by The New York Times shows the destruction of Khamenei’s compound in the Iranian capital, Tehran. However, it is highly unlikely that he was staying there. Meanwhile, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that Pezeshkian is in “full health”.
Iran began responding shortly after the opening strikes, launching several waves of missiles and drones at Israel. Impacts were reported, with even one man wounded in northern Israel, but Hebrew media has so far shared very little details, likely due to military censorship.
The Islamic Republic also attacked U.S. bases across the Middle East. with missile and drone impacts reported in Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. There are still no details on the result of these attacks, which are still ongoing.
The main targets are reported to be Harir Air Base in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE.
However, the most devastating Iranian attack targeted the U.S. Naval Support Activity based in Bahrain, home to the Naval Forces Central Command. The base was struck by several missiles, in addition to a drone that took out a large radar dome. Fire is still raging there, according to videos posted online.
The recent developments shows that, as expected, the attack on Iran quickly escalated into a regional conflict. The Islamic Republic’s allies in Iraq and Yemen will reportedly join the fight against the U.S. and Israel, although there are no indications yet that Hezbollah in Lebanon will take such a step.
The conflict could escalate further if Arab countries decided to retaliate against Iran. Taking into consideration recent remarks by President Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, which left little doubt about the fact that the U.S. and Israel are looking for a regime change in Tehran, this could happen within a few days.
