Another Israeli-Iranian War Is ‘Only Matter Of Time’ – Report

Another war between Israel and Iran is “only a matter of time,” according to a report published by The New York Times on November 9.

The report casts serious doubt on the idea that the 12-day war between the countries in June neutralized Iran’s nuclear program.

It claims that Middle East officials and experts increasingly believe Israeli and United States strikes caused less damage to the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities than previously thought, and that both countries are preparing for the prospect of another attack.

“Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, enough to make 11 nuclear weapons, is either buried under rubble, as Iran claims, or has been spirited away to a safe place, as Israeli officials believe,” the report said.

Other factors make another war likely, the report said, referring to the ongoing impasse in talks between the U.S. and Iran and the reintroduction of international sanctions on the Islamic Republic after the activation of the snapback mechanism from the 2015 nuclear deal by the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

Those factors, coupled with intensive Iranian work on a new enrichment site it refuses to give international inspectors access to, make many in the Gulf think that another Israeli attack is “almost inevitable,” the report added.

The NYT piece is the latest in a series of reports from Hebrew, Arab and Western media that are hinting at a near war with Iran over alleged nuclear activities and development missile capabilities.

One recent report by the Institute for Science and International Security talked about activities at one of Iran’s most secretive nuclear sites. Another from CNN said that the Islamic Republic ramped up efforts to rebuild its missile program despite the recent reimposition of international sanctions.

There were even rumors of Iran developing an intercontinental ballistic missile with a range of 10,000 kilometers, which is enough to reach mainland U.S.

In addition, Iran has been facing increasing accusations from Israel. Very recently, the Mossad spy agency accused the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of orchestrating a string of recent attacks on Jewish sites in Western countries.

A later report by Axios said that the guards’ elite Quds Force attempted to kill the Israeli ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz-Neiger, and that the plot was foiled by Israel, the U.S. and Mexican security forces. These accusations were denied not only by the Islamic Republic, but also by Mexico.

All of these recent reports, accusations and speculations could be a part of coordinated efforts to prepare the public opinion for war with Iran.

The first war was not initiated by Iran, and the next one won’t likely be. The Islamic Republic is, however, preparing and appears to be more alerted than back in June when it thought that talks with the U.S. could prevent, or at least delay, an attack by Israel.
