Israel is growing frustrated as the Houthis (Ansar Allah) continue to launch ballistic missiles from Yemen in response to the war on the Gaza Strip.
On July 10, the Houthis fired two ballistic missiles at Israel. The first missile, fired in the morning, was intercepted outside Israel’s borders. The second, launched late at night, fell short before reaching Israel; accordingly, it triggered no sirens, although its launch was identified.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for the first attack only, revealing that the target was Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel.
Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive against Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis have launched around 58 ballistic missiles and at least 13 suicide drones at Israel. In response, Israel carried out during the same period six waves of strikes targeting civilian infrastructure in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. However, the group was not deterred.
In fact, the Houthis resumed attacks on Israel-linked shipping in the Red Sea earlier this month, sinking two ships off Yemen’s western shores.
Angered by the Houthis’ recent attacks, Israel asked the United States to renew its strikes on Yemen, the Kan public broadcaster reported on July 10
Israel told the U.S. that ongoing Houthi attacks on shipping “can no longer remain solely an Israeli problem,” and called for “more intense combined attacks against Houthi regime targets — not just [Israeli] air force fighter jet strikes, but also a renewal of American attacks and the formation of a coalition including additional countries,” the Hebrew-language network reported, citing a source familiar with the matter.
An security official told Kan that the move comes in response to expanding Houthi aggression: “A broad coalition is needed to convey to the Houthi regime that it is in danger.”
Last May, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would stop bombing the Houthis, saying that the group had agreed to stop attacks on shipping lanes in the Middle East. Under the agreement, neither the U.S. nor the Houthis would target the other, including U.S. ships in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, Oman said in a statement at the time.
It is unclear if the U.S. will respond to Israel’s request. In any case, a new wave of U.S. strikes on Yemen will not likely break the will of the Houthis.
