On the evening of June 30, new reports from the frontlines revealed details of a successful operation of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the area of Toretsk. As a result of the risky sophisticated assault, Russian forces gained control of a large Ukrainian stronghold.
The press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense provided the details of the recent operation. Servicemen of the Veterans volunteer brigade of the Russian army launched assault on a heavily fortified stronghold of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the northeastern part of the village of Pivnichnoe located on the eastern outskirts of the town of Toretsk.
Russian forces discovered a tunnel of more than 3 km running along the Seversky Donets canal on the outskirts of the settlement. They secretly cleared the tunnel and used it to reach the rear of the Ukrainian stronghold. The Russians also used the secret tunnel for military supplies and transfered some equipment through it to support the operation.
The defending Ukrainian forces did not expect an attack from the rear and they were caught off guard. As a result of the battle, the Armed Forces of Ukraine were forced to retreat. They abandoned the military positions and tried to escape from the area. Some of them surrendered to the attackers and were taken prisoners. The large stronghold fortified with underground facilities capable of withstanding artillery fire, equipped with concrete firing points, came under the Russian control.
Earlier, the Russian military used the same tactics in the battle for Avdeevka. LINK In January, Russian fighters also cleared a tunnel and reached the rear of the Ukrainian troops in the city. As a result of the assault, they managed to take control of the Ukrainian stronghold and held control of it until the main forces approached the area.
