A truck fire at a private military plant in central Bulgaria triggered a series of explosions on August 8, completely destroying an ammunition warehouse and forcing evacuations of workers and local residents.
Emergency crews managed to bring the blaze under control at the EMCO-operated facility near the village of Belitsa in the Tryavna municipality, according to the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA). No deaths or injuries were reported.
Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev stated there was no indication of foreign involvement. While the ammunition warehouse was wiped out, neighboring structures remained undamaged.
Firefighters continued efforts to put out flames that had extended into the surrounding forest, while officials sealed off the area and limited access.
Though residents were initially instructed to stay inside, close their windows, and wear face masks due to smoke, subsequent air-quality checks detected no elevated readings.
The origin of the fire is still being investigated. EMCO manager Slavcho Dimiev noted that a propellant charge may have spontaneously ignited, though the company subsequently excluded human error as a cause.
Due to the hazard of secondary detonations, authorities announced that the site cannot be fully inspected for at least 24 hours.
It’s worth noting that EMCO — owned by arms dealer Emilian Gebrev — is a major supplier of Soviet-standard ammunition, including 122mm and 152mm artillery shells, rockets, and mortar rounds, to Ukraine.
Because domestic political friction in Bulgaria initially blocked direct military aid to Ukraine, EMCO funneled billions of dollars in ammunition to Kyiv forces through third-party NATO intermediaries in the U.S., Poland, Romania, and the Czech Republic. A series of major blasts and fires struck warehouses of the company in the town of Karnobat in July 2022 and June 2023.
