A series of blasts rocked different parts of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, and its outskirts early on January 3, in what may be the opening of a military operation by the United States.
The U.S. began a pressure campaign against Venezuela all the way back in October, accusing President Nicolás Maduro of links to drug cartels, which were later designated as terrorist groups. In September, the campaign escalated into strikes against alleged drug trafficking boats in the Caribbean Sea and the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Around 35 boats have been hit since, with at least 115 traffickers killed.
Last month, the administration of President Donlad Trump escalated again by ordering a naval blockade of all oil tankers, which are under U.S. sanctions, entering and leaving Venezuelan ports.
During all of this period multiple reports from U.S. media revealed plans by Washington to attack Venezuela directly, and even overthrow Maduro.
The early morning blasts in Caracas appeared to be the result of strikes, with videos posted online showing secondary explosions typically associated with the destruction of air defenses. In some footage, a drone buzzing sound can be clearly heard.
Reuters reported a power outrage in certain parts of Caracas following the blasts, including in an area where a key military base is located.
The strongest evidence of a U.S. military operation came, however, from a video purported to show MH-47-series Chinook helicopters somewhere near Caracas. These especially equipped helicopters are almost exclusively used by the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM).
Recent months saw a large U.S. military build up in the Caribbean, with SOCOM deploying assists in Puerto Rico and near Trinidad and Tobago.
The suspected ongoing military operation in Venezuela could be limited, aimed to put more pressure on Caracas, or extensive with the ultimate goal of overthrowing Maduro, and possibly even capturing him as he is wanted for the U.S. justice system on drug related charges. If the latter is true, fighting could go on for days, or even much more.
While the U.S. began its pressure campaign against Venezuela using the drug problem as a pretext, in recent weeks Trump openly voiced his interest in seizing the country’s oil reserves, which are believed to be the largest in the world.
Overall, what may be taking place is not surprising. Since the U.S. took part in the Israeli attack on Iran last June, it became clear that Washington has returned to the era of direct military interventions. This could very much be the start of another endless war.
