On January 7, a soldier of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) was killed and four others were wounded as a result of an attack by ISIS cells in Syria’s central Region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The London-based monitoring group said that the attack targeted several positions of the SAA in the outskirts of the village of Jedin in the southern Raqqa countryside.

The terrorists reportedly took advantage of poor weather conditions which forced the army to halt most of its operation around Jedin.

ISIS cells in central Syria stepped up their attacks on government forces in the last two months. The terrorists carried out attacks in the eastern Hama countryside, the eastern Homs countryside, the southern Raqqa countryside and in the western and southern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

The terrorist group as unofficially blamed for a missile attack that targeted vehicles shuttling workers from and to the government-held al-Taim oil field in Deir Ezzor on December 30. Ten workers were killed and two others were wounded in the attack.

ISIS insurgency in central Syria will likely continue this year. The SAA and its allies will have to make much more efforts to contain the terrorist group’s cells and keep them away from all key routes and urban centers in the region.
