At least 23 soldiers and pro-government fighters were killed in Syria’s central region on June 3 and 4 as a result of attacks by ISIS cells, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on June 5.

According to the London-based monitoring group, the fighters were killed in ambushes set by ISIS cells.

One of the victims of improvised explosive devices plated by the terrorists was an Iranian military advisor identified as Hassan Abdullahzadeh. The Iranian service member was killed along with his guard, also Iranian, on the Homs-Deir Ezzor highway on June 4.

These attacks didn’t go unpunished. On June 6, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out more than 40 airstrikes on ISIS cells in the central Syria.

The Russian airstrikes targeted the following areas:

  • The outskirts of the town of Ithriyah in eastern Hama;
  • The outskirts of the town of Resafa in southern Raqqa;
  • The outskirts of Jabal al Bishrī on the administrative border between Raqqa and Deir Ezzor;
  • The administrative border between Homs and Deir Ezzor.

ISIS cells are known to be highly active in the targeted areas. The results of the Russian airstrikes are yet to be revealed.

The terrorist group’s strong presence in central Syria poses a serious threat to the security and stability of the war-torn country. Russia’s efforts are essential in the battle against this threat.
