The Russian military advanced closer to Huliapole, a stronghold of Kiev forces, on November 20, as the collapse of Ukrainian defenses in Zaporozhye, where the key city is located, and in nearby Dnepropetrovsk accelerated.
The Vostok [East] Group of Forces imposed full control of Veseloe, located to the east of Huliapole, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, which revealed that the attack on the settlement was led by the 114th Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 127th Division of the 5th Guards Combined Arms Army.
“Since the beginning of November, Veseloe has become the fifth settlement liberated by the servicemen of the 114th Motorized Rifle Regiment,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is unsuccessfully trying to stabilize the situation in the direction by transferring reserves and launching counterattacks, which only lead to new losses and disruption of their plans in this area,” it added.
As a result of the battle in Veseloe, Ukraine lost an area with a size of more than 15 square kilometers, including the settlement itself and its outskirts.
The Vostok Group of Forces also advanced to the west of Veseloe, with preliminary reports suggesting that Zatyshshya, the last settlement before the eastern outskirts of Huliapole, had been captured. This is yet to be confirmed by the Russian MoD.
Meanwhile in Dnepropetrovsk, the Vostok Group of Forces made additional gains along the Haichur River, moving a bit closer to the northern outskirts of Huliapole.
Russian troops have reportedly stormed Radisne from the northern and eastern direction. The settlement will likely be captured very soon.
All in all, the collapse of Ukrainian defenses around Huliapole is clearly accelerating. The Vostok Group of Forces could reach the eastern or northern outskirts of the city within a few weeks, if not days. Kiev is bringing in some reinforcements, but appears to be restrained by a serious shortage in manpower.
This collapse is of course the direct result of Kiev’s decision to allocate most of its resources to the defense of the city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk, which is also about to be captured by the Russian military.
