The crisis that broke out in the southern part of the Syrian city of Daraa, known as Daraa al-Balad, more than two months has officially reached its end.
On September 9, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) 4th Division began withdrawing its heavy weapons from the outskirts of Daraa al-Balad. The elite unit was deployed there to besiege and pressure more than 100 wanted gunmen who were holding out inside the area.
A day earlier, SAA troops entered Daraa al-Balad under the August 31 reconciliation agreement that was brokered by Russia.
The agreement was fully implemented. The SAA established nine positions inside and around Daraa al-Balad after combing and securing the entire area. The local police station was also reactivated.
More than 900 gunmen in Daraa al-Balad joined the reconciliation process and handed over their weapons. The fate of those who were wanted by Syrian authorities remains unclear.

The agreement allowed thousands of locals who fled Daraa al-Balad over the last two months to return to their homes. Syrian authorities facilitated their return by removing several checkpoints from the main entrances of the area.

The reconciliation agreement in Daraa al-Balad was a major victory for Russian efforts in Syria. Now, Syrian authorities will likely begin working to stabilize and secure the western countryside of Daraa. A day earlier, seven Syrian service members were killed and three others were injured in the region in a roadside bomb attack.
