Iranian state media has shared dramatic footage of missiles being launched amid intense Israeli strikes during the 12-day war earlier this year.
The war broke out on June 13, when Israel launched a surprise attack against Iran’s nuclear program. The goals of the war quickly expanded to include the missile program of the Islamic Republic. However, the fighting ended when a ceasefire was suddenly announced on June 24, just two days after the United States joined Israel by attacking three key nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic.
The footage, originally aired by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting as a part of an interview on the war with officers in the country’s missile forces, was posted to social networks on September 6.
In the never-before-seen footage, two Iranian ballistic missiles can be seen getting launched even after a third nearby launcher was hit by an Israeli strike. Flaming debris from the destroyed launcher flew very close to the missiles as they took off.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) estimated that some two-thirds of Iran’s ballistic missile launchers, around 250, were destroyed during the war, along with around 1,000 of the missiles. While most were targeted by Israeli fighter jets and combat drones, some were destroyed from the ground by commandos from the Mossad spy agency.
Still, the Islamic Republic managed to launch more than 500 ballistic missiles and around 1,100 suicides drones at targets in Israel, according to the IDF itself.
Hebrew media reported a total of 36 missile impacts and one drone strike in populated areas across Israel. Later reports revealed that the real number of impacts was higher, and that the effectiveness of Israel’s air defense network had been seriously degraded towards the end of the war.
Israeli health officials said that the Iranian missile attacks claimed the lives of 28 people, all but one of them civilians, and wounded over 3,000.
Israel is already working to strengthen the country’s multi-layered air defense network by purchasing additional interceptors, radars and related systems. On the other side, Iran is reported to be working to rebuild its air defenses and to bolster its missile capabilities. In short, both sides appear to be preparing for the next round of fighting.
While the performance of Iran’s missile forces improved towards the end of the war, the Islamic Republic still has a lot to improve especially when it comes to operational security.
