Some oil-loading operations were suspended in the United Arab Emirates’ Fujairah on March 14, following a drone attack that caused a massive fire.
Fujairah’s oil terminals, the outlet for about one million barrels per day, provide a strategic bypass to the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway has been nearly completely closed since the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran, which hit multiple vessels nearby in response.
The fire in Fujairah broke out after debris fell during the interception of a drone, but no injuries were reported, the emirate’s media office said in a statement, adding that civil defense forces are handling the incident to contain the fire.
Both Bloomberg News and Reuters reported that some oil-loading operations at Fujairah had been suspended as a result of the fire.
Right after the attack, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that American assets in the UAE, including ports, docks and military facilities, could be targeted. The statement urged residents in the Emirates to avoid ports, docks and U.S. military installations “to prevent civilian casualties.”
Iranian officials also claimed the U.S. had begun using its bases in the UAE after “other bases in the region were destroyed,” though the claim could not be independently verified.
The attack on Fujairah and the Iranian warning that followed appear to be a response to a series of American strikes that hit military sites on Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil exporting hub.
U.S. President Trump threatened to target oil facilities there next if Iran does not guarantee safe passage through the waterway.
Fujairah was not the only target of recent Iranian retaliatory attacks. In a later announcement, the IRGC said that it struck Al Dhafra Air Base in the 49th wave of Operation True Promise 4. The air base, which is located near the emirate capital of Abu Dhabi, is known to host U.S. forces.
The guards hit a MIM-104 Patriot air defense system, radars, the control tower, and hangars with suicide drones and ballistic missiles.
The Ministry of Defense of the UAE said that air defenses intercepted nine ballistic missiles and 33 suicide drones during the day, all launched from Iran.
The UAE has taken the brunt of Iranian retaliatory attacks since the start of the American-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic, and now these attacks are escalating. With the cost rising, Abu Dhabi could eventually respond, even if other Gulf countries refused to join it.
