Early on November 10, several explosions were reportedly heard in the southern countryside of Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that unidentified combat drones targeted weapons and ammunition depots of Iranian-backed forces near the town of al-Bukamal on the Syrian-Iraqi border. Seven people were allegedly killed.
A few hours after the alleged strikes, a convoy of trucks arrived from Iraq and entered an area held by Iranian-backed forces near al-Bukamal, according to the London-based monitoring group.
The SOHR’s claims are questionable to say the least. Just a day earlier, sources close to Iranian-backed forces in Syria and Iraq said that war remnants and unexploded ordnance were being disposed of near al-Bukamal. This may be the real cause of the explosions.
Iranian-backed Syrian and Iraqi forces maintain a large presence in the southern countryside of Deir Ezzor in order to counter ISIS cells and guard the Syrian-Iraqi border line.
It is worth mentioning however that a recent report by al-Monitor claimed that the October 20 drone attack on the US al-Tanf garrison in southeastern Syria was launched from the outskirts of al-Bukamal by Iranian-backed forces.
These forces were targeted in the last few years by both the US and Israel, who continue to mount pressure on Iran to withdraw from Syria.
