The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged on June 1 that one of its medical officers was killed and seven other troops were wounded as a result of a drone attack by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
The slain officer was identified by the military as Cpt. Dr. Ori Yosef Silvester, the medical officer for the Givati Brigade’s Shaked Battalion.
In addition, two officers and a soldier were seriously wounded, one soldier was moderately hurt, and two officers and a soldier were lightly injured in the attack.
According to an IDF probe, two first-person view (FPV) suicide quadcopters launched by Hezbollah struck an armored vehicle in the town of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah. The explosion from the drones killed Silvester and wounded the seven other soldiers.
Among those lightly hurt is the commander of the Shaked Battalion, a lieutenant colonel, the military said, noting that the battalion commander is due to return to command the unit in the coming days.
The deadly drone attack was just one of dozens that targeted the IDF in southern Lebanon in recent days as it expanded its control, crossing the Litani River and capturing Beaufort Castle. The move completely ignored the ceasefire brokered by the U.S. more than a month ago.
Most of Hezbollah’s recent attacks were carried out using fiber optic-guided FPV suicide quadcopters, which are completely immune to jamming and very hard to detect.
The group released ten videos showing just a few of the drone attacks that took place in recent days. Notably, many of these attacks targeted newly-established positions of the IDF, in addition to troops and vehicles, in Beaufort Castle, and in nearby towns like Zawtar al-Sharqiyah.
The latest deadly drone attack in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah took place as Israel backed down from its threats to bomb the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, — a stronghold of Hezbollah — following threats from Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump intervened brokering another ceasefire, with later reports revealing that Hezbollah agreed not to target northern Israel.
While efforts are reported to be underway to expand the ceasefire to southern Lebanon, fighting there will likely continue, as Israel will not give up its operational freedom in the region, and Hezbollah will not stop its insurgency without a complete withdrawal by the IDF.
