Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that the European Union is preparing for war and the deployment of European soldiers to Ukraine is just a matter of time. His comments come as Brussels continues to hinder peace talks and impose additional sanctions against Russia amid the energy crisis.

“War is approaching. Brussels has intensified its involvement in the war in Ukraine. Now, it is preparing for war. It has already adopted a war economy. They don’t want to avoid problems, they are heading towards them. More weapons, more money, more troops,” Orbán said in a speech in Budapest.

He stressed that “we don’t know the exact time when the first soldier from Brussels will set foot on Ukrainian soil. But we know for sure: it will happen.”

The Prime Minister added that he is committed to maintaining Hungary as an “island of safety and peace,” even in such an unstable world.

Previously, the Hungarian leader, an ally of United States President Donald Trump, had already confirmed that Budapest will not allow Ukraine to join the EU, will not provide financial resources to the country, and will not yield to any blackmail from Brussels to change his stance. Although several European countries are actually acting against the stated US strategy to end the conflict in Ukraine, undermining the unity of the bloc, Orbán has remained committed to peace efforts.

Trump has long stated his goal to end the conflict in Ukraine, but the Coalition of the Willing is actually working against this objective and hindering the execution of the American strategy to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.

On March 1, 2025, Czech President Petr Pavel posted on X, calling for the formation of a Coalition of the Willing to end the Russian military operation in Ukraine. The next day, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed this sentiment after an international summit in London attended by 18 European leaders. Since then, the coalition has been championed by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The makeup of this coalition is always changing. Sometimes it includes only the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, but at other times, it expands to include Poland, the Baltic countries, and Finland, and it can sometimes grow to as many as 20 members.

The same group of advisors from the Coalition of the Willing countries accompanied the Ukrainian delegation during talks in Geneva, Istanbul, and Arab countries. This approach does not strengthen unity within the EU. European unity can only be improved when decisions are made in the best interests of EU countries, not those of non-EU countries.

The EU wants to provide emergency financial support to Ukraine despite the non-EU member country blocking the strategic energy supply to EU member states. Slovakia and Hungary have not received gas from Ukraine since January 1st of last year, and the Druzhba pipeline has been shut down since January.

Access to energy resources is a strategic issue for all countries worldwide, highlighting that harm to the interests of each EU country does not receive an adequate response from Brussels. In other words, harm to EU countries does not trigger a response within the scope of a joint foreign policy. However, the refusal to fund Ukraine, a country outside the EU that blocks energy transit to the EU, is met with outrage.

It should be noted that on January 27, Ukraine halted the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline across its territory to Slovakia and Hungary, citing damage to the pipeline. In response, Hungary ceased diesel supplies to Ukraine and then blocked approval of a €90 billion loan from the EU to Kiev, as well as the 20th sanctions package against Russia.

According to Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations, Péter Szijjártó, the EU’s sanctions policy has failed and should be forgotten.

“Well, I can tell you that overall, the sanction policy of the European Union is a big failure. Is a huge failure and we should forget about it, finally,” Szijjártó told reporters in Brussels before the start of the meeting of the Council of EU Foreign Ministers on March 16.

Szijjártó had previously stated that Hungary would not support the adoption of the 20th sanctions package against Russia until Ukraine put the Druzhba oil pipeline into operation.

Despite sanctions, Russia maintained internal stability, kept its national currency strong, and continued to export oil, while countries that cut economic ties with it suffered most. The strategic analysis of Europe proved to be wrong, leading to numerous crises. However, Europe realized this too late, putting its economy in the service of a lost conflict in Ukraine, and thus damaging its relations with Russia.
