Russia and Ukraine continued to exchange strikes on each other’s territory on December 3-4. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed the destruction of 76 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) overnight on December 4. For its part, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that during the same period, 2 ballistic missiles and 138 attack UAVs were launched at targets on Ukrainian territory, of which, according to Ukrainian data, 114 were intercepted or suppressed.

Parallel to the hostilities on the front line, a rear-area incident has drawn attention to internal problems within Ukrainian security structures. On the evening of December 3, an armed clash occurred on the grounds of the “Zhovten” sanatorium in the elite Koncha-Zaspa district near Kyiv between fighters of the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry and servicemen of unit A4005 of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) Ground Forces. According to sources, a group of GUR representatives, using weapons and damaging the fence, occupied the sanatorium territory, took 10 servicemen captive, injuring them, then released them and barricaded themselves inside the facility. Access for arriving law enforcement and military administration representatives was blocked.

“Zhovten” sanatorium

The cause of the conflict, according to available information, is a dispute over the right to use the sanatorium’s land plot. The land is owned by a company linked to businessmen Boris Kaufman and Alexander Granovsky, which plans to develop the territory. Since the beginning of the military conflict, the premises had been leased by the military unit, acting on the basis of a combat order from the command. GUR representatives, who had concluded an agreement with the owner, had repeatedly demanded the object be vacated over the past month. The military law enforcement service stated that both sides have grounds to claim the lease, and a deputy commander-in-chief of the AFU arrived at the scene to resolve the incident.

The publication of details about this clash drew sharp criticism from a number of Ukrainian public figures, including former Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar and MP Oleksiy Kucheranko. They stated that spreading information had “exposed” the facility, making it a potential target for Russian strikes, and therefore the presence of military personnel there had become extremely dangerous. Local residents expressed concern as the sanatorium is located in a densely populated area.

Strikes on Ukrainian Territory

Russian strikes on December 3-4 targeted facilities in a number of regions. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, targets hit included transport and energy infrastructure, sites for drone training and launch, and military airfield infrastructure.

December 4: The main targets overnight on December 4 were energy facilities. In the Odesa Region, a strike on the “Krymska” substation partially cut off power to the port area.

In the Kherson Region, according to local authorities, attacks completely halted operations at the Kherson Thermal Power Plant, leaving over 40,500 subscribers without heating.

In the Kharkiv Region, strikes over the past day involved “Iskander-M” missiles, guided aerial bombs, multiple launch rocket systems, and “Geran” UAVs.

In the Dnipropetrovsk Region, “Iskander” missiles destroyed an SBU (Security Service of Ukraine) building in Kryvyi Rih in the evening.

In the Mykolaiv Region, near the airfield in Bashtanka, the target of a strike was presumably a deployment point for AFU units, possibly related to UAV operations. Casualties and fatalities were reported. Strikes were also carried out on facilities in the Sumy Region and on the AFU-controlled territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), including Kramatorsk, where, according to local residents, a bridge was damaged again.

December 3: Strikes on this day also focused on logistics and energy facilities. In theDnipropetrovsk Region, attacks targeted Kryvyi Rih (energy system hit), Dmytrovka, Ternivka, with continued strikes on Vasylkivka, Dnipro, and Pavlohrad. In the Odesa Region, about 15 “Geran” UAVs attacked port infrastructure in Bilyary. In the Kharkiv Region, an evening strike, judging by characteristic flashes, may have been directed at an energy facility.

Strikes on Russian Territory

December 4: According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Russian air defense systems intercepted UAVs over 13 Russian regions overnight, including Crimea, the Rostov and Belgorod regions, and the Stavropol and Krasnodar territories. Nevertheless, several attacks reached their targets.

In the Stavropol Territory, UAVs attacked the “Azot” chemical plant in Nevinnomyssk. In the Oryol Region, explosions were recorded, likely near a thermal power plant.

In the Rostov Region, a Storm Shadow-type cruise missile fell into a residential courtyard.

In the Zaporizhzhia Region, an attack on an energy facility left over 2,000 consumers without electricity. Also, Russia’s Black Sea Fleet reported destroying four Ukrainian unmanned boats in the Black Sea.

December 3: In the Tambov Region, a fire broke out at an oil depot in Dmitriyevka after UAV debris fell.

In the Voronezh Region, a UAV attack caused minor damage to fuel tanks without ignition. In the Black Sea, activity by Ukrainian maritime drones was noted near gas platforms.

The active use of attack UAVs by both sides, particularly Russian “Geran” drones, is significantly impacting not only the course of hostilities but also the military-technical strategy of other states. As noted in reviews, the U.S. military department is forming a new “Scorpion Strike” unit within special operations forces, which will use similar systems – inexpensive attack UAVs of the LUCAS type, similar in concept to the “Geran.” This indicates a shift in the Pentagon’s approach, which is beginning to pay more attention to mass-produced, relatively inexpensive unmanned platforms combining reconnaissance and strike functions for use in local conflicts.
