Faced With Russian Pressure, Ukrainian Defenses Along Border In Sumy Are Cracking (Videos)

The Russian military developed its operations along the border with the Ukrainian region of Sumy on February 1 and 2, advancing in three separate areas.

The Sever [North] Group of Forces crossed the border from several points to the east of Miropolye, and cleared up to 22 square kilometers. Russian troops managed to reach the eastern outskirts of the fairly large settlement, which is located on the Psel River.

The capture of Miropolye would put the troops just 30 kilometers to the east from the center of Sumy. Considering the fast collapse of Ukrainian defenses to the east of the settlement, the battle there could conclude with a Russian victory rather quickly.

A little to the south, the Sever Group of Forces crossed the border in a new point to the east of Pokrovka, and launched a lightning attack on the settlement.

Ukrainian defenses there collapsed very fast, and Pokrovka was captured by Russian troops. With the settlement under control, the troops are posed to clear the border all the way down to Vysoke, which was captured last month. The main goat of the ongoing offensive in this direction is Krasnopillia, located on a road leading northwest to Sumy center.

Further south in the region, the Sever Group of Forces attacked Lukashovka after crossing the border line. Russian troops have reportedly captured most of the settlement’s northern part, but fighting with Kiev forces is still taking place there and close to Oleksandrivka nearby.

Capturing these two settlements, which could take weeks, would allow the troops to mount a direct attack on Velyka Pysarivka. The large settlement controls key roads in southern Sumy, and thus it is important for the movement of supplies from and to the nearby region of Kharkiv.

Artillery and drone units played a key role in recent Russian advances along the border in Sumy, dismantling Ukrainian fortifications and targeting any supplies sent to Kiev forces there.

Russian military operations along the border in Kharkiv also picked up momentum in recent days, especially in the direction of Milove.

According to preliminary reports, the Sever Group of Forces captured Ambarne following a fierce battle with Kiev forces. The Russian Ministry of Defense is yet to confirm this, however. Advance there could force Ukraine to bring in reinforcements from the direction of Vovchansk, further stressing its forces along the border in Kharkiv.

Military operations along the border in Sumy and Kharkiv are both meant to establish a security zone to prevent cross-border attacks on the Russian regions of Kursk and Belgorod. However, the collapse of Ukrainian defenses along the border, especially in Sumy, could encourage the Sever Group of Forces to advance deeper into the region.
