On June 27, an explosion rocked the northern Syrian city of Afrin, which is occupied by the Turkish military and its proxies.

The explosion was caused by an explosive device which struck a civilian vehicle as it was passing on road leading to the Turkish-occupied town of Azaz to the east. As a result of the explosion, a child, 10-year old girl, and two men were killed.

One of the slain men was identified as Lieutenant Mohamad Hamadah, an officer of the Free Syrian Police which is a law enforcement body backed by Turkey. Hamadah was most likely the target of the attack.

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense and officials in the Syrian opposition accused the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and he People Protection Units of orchestrating the attack. As usual, no evidence was presented.

The bombing is the most recent in a series of attacks targeting Turkish forces and civilians in Afrin. Earlier this month, a rocket attack killed 22 people and wounded more than 20 others in Afrin city.

The situation in Afrin has been unstable since 2018, when the Turkish military and its proxies occupied most of the Kurdish-majority region.
