On the early morning of September 4, another Ukrainian sabotage group attempted to attack the Russian territory. They crossed the border in the Bryansk region where they were met by Russian border guards.
Fighters of the FSB Border Control and attached units of the Ministry of Defense thwarted Ukrainian attempt to infiltrate the territory of Russia in the border Sevsky district of the Bryansk region, the local authorities reported.
The attack was launched after heavy fire by Ukrainian artillery. According to the local reports, a group of about 30 Ukrainian saboteurs crossed the border in a wooded area and approached the positions of the Russian border guards. A tight shooting battle began. However, Ukrainian servicemen did not take into account that additional Russian forces were deployed on the flanks. A border armored personnel carrier also entered the battle. As a result, the Ukrainian grouping was contained by fighting. In about 20 minutes, they began to retreat to the Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian artillery again intensified shelling on Russian positions, facing no response from the Russian side.
As a result of the fighting, one Russian border guard was reportedly killed, several servicemen of the Ministry of Defense were wounded. The Russian military sources provided no information on the Ukrainian casualties.
The Ukrainian military has recently increased the attempts to cross the Russian border to probe the Russian defence or to launch terrorist attacks on the Russian territory. At least two more Ukrainian groups were destroyed near the border in late August LINK. Since the Armed Forces of Ukraine are stuck on the frontlines where Kiev’s counteroffensive led to no results, Ukrainian attacks on the border will continue. They are aimed to create at least some victories in the media and to distract the Russian military from the frontlines in the northern Donbass, where Russian forces maintain the military initiative.
