Hezbollah launched some 100 rockets from Lebanon at northern Israel on October 20, with Hebrew media reporting damage and casualties.
In separate statements, the group said that the rocket attacks targeted mainly the city Safed as well as the nearby Rosh Pina settlement and Philon base. There were also reports of a rocket and drone attack on the city of Haifa and the nearby area of Krayot, but the group has not claimed responsibility yet.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that several rockets were intercepted by its air defenses. Still, Hebrew media reported that seven people were wounded in Safed, Haifa and nearby areas.
Intense Israeli strikes targeted Lebanon throughout the day. The IDF said that it destroyed a command center belonging to Hezbollah’s intelligence division and an underground weapons manufacturing site in the capital, Beirut.
Separate strikes in southern Lebanon, the heartland of Hezbollah, targeted and killed three prominent members of the group, according to the military.
The IDF names them as al-Hajj Abbas Salameh, a senior member of Hezbollah’s Southern Front; Reda Abbas Ouda, a communications specialist; and Ahmed Ali Hussain, responsible for weapons manufacturing.
From its side, the Lebanese military said that an Israeli strike on southern Lebanon hit one of its vehicles, killing three soldiers.
It’s worth noting that the IDF said a day earlier that a reservist who was wounded while fighting in southern Lebanon had died. The slain reservist was serving as a platoon sergeant in the Alon Brigade’s 5030th Battalion.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah.
The IDF announced the launch of a limited ground operation in southern Lebanon on September 30. Since then, Israeli troops have not yet made any real gains and Hezbollah rocket attacks have been increasing.
The confrontation has so far resulted in 29 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 43 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 2,448 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
