On September 6, a high level delegation of the Russian Federal Government headed by Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
The delegation received an official reception at Damascus International Airport by Ayman Susan, Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister, and a group of the country’s senior diplomats.
According to the Syria News TV, Maria Zakharova, Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, and Special Presidential envoy, Mikhail Bogdanov, were among the delegation’s members.
The Syrian Arab News Agency, SANA, revealed that the Russian delegation would hold talks with the Syrian government on economical, technical and scientific issues.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov is expected to arrive in Damascus tomorrow. The visit will be his first to the war-torn country in the last eight years. Lavrov will meet senior Syrian officials, likely including President Bashar al-Assad.
Syria, which is facing a serious economic crisis, increasing pressure by the West and a COVID-19 pandemic, is counting on its allies, headed by Russia, for help.
