Three suicide drone launched from Yemen by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) were intercepted over southern Israel on September 8, with at least one of them reaching an area where the Dimona nuclear reactor is located.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that one of the drones was intercepted over Ramon International Airport, which was hit a day earlier by a Houthi suicide drone. Sirens sounded in the airport area amid the new attack and the launch of several interceptors was reported.
The second drone set off sirens in the southern settlement of Dimona, where the reactor is located. The military said that the drone was shot down. However, smoke was seen rising from a nearby area.
The Dimona reactor, officially known as the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center, is the cornerstone of Israel’s undeclared nuclear weapons program.

A third drone was intercepted with no sirens activated, “according to protocol,” the IDF said, implying that it was downed before it could threaten any targets on the ground.
On September 7, the Houthis announced that they had attacked targets in Israel with eight suicide drones. Only one hit Ramon International Airport, lighting wounding a man. Three others were intercepted by the IDF along the border with Egypt. The fate of the remaining four remains unclear.
The Houthis have stepped up missile and drone attacks on Israel since August 28, when Israeli strikes hit Yemeni capital, Sanaa, killing the Prime Minister of the group’s government, Ahmed al-Rahawi, along with eight of the ministers.
However, the group’s recent drone attacks are also a response to the Israeli escalation in the Gaza Strip, where a large-scale offensive is expected to start soon.
Israel, which has already carried out 16 attacks against Yemen, will likely respond to the Houthis’ latest attacks. However, there is nothing the IDF can do that could deter the group, which has already survived hundreds of strikes not only by Israel, but also by the United States and the United Kingdom.
Only a ground offensive in Yemen could at least distract the Houthis. And while the U.S. have reportedly considered such an option with the forces of the internationally-recognized Yemeni government, this is not expected to happen any time soon.
