Yemen’s Houthis (Ansar Allah) captured key military and administrative positions in the province of Lahij and repelled an attack by Saudi-backed forces toward the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait on November 2.
In Lahij’s al-Maqatirah district, Houthi fighters took control of the local government complex and the headquarters of the Fourth Mountain Infantry Brigade, which includes the command of the Tur al-Baha military axis, according to Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni.
The pro-Houthi news outlet reported that the group also captured al-Rabou market, the strategic al-Maqatirah fortress and the Zariqat al-Sham area during their advance.
The advances brought the Houthis to the outskirts of Tur al-Baha, with reports indicating further advances by the group toward the al-Najisha and al-Qariba mountains overlooking the district.
The Yemen Press Agency, linked to the Houthis, reported that Saudi-backed forces took heavy casualties during the battle on the al-Maqatirah front.
Separately, a Houthi military source told the Sanaa-based official Yemen News Agency (Saba) that the group’s fighters had repelled several attempts by Saudi-backed forces, commanded by Saudi officer Badr al-Harbi, to advance toward Bab al-Mandab.
The source said the attackers suffered heavy casualties, including killed and wounded Saudi personnel, and that the failed operation triggered disputes among the different factions involved in the advance.
The Houthis continue to dictate the course of the war in southwestern Yemen, with their opponents unable to reverse their advances or dislodge them from key positions. This sustained pressure is tightening their grip on the Bab al-Mandab Strait and gradually bringing the key port city of Aden within reach, extending their campaign toward the south.
