The Houthis (Ansar Allah) launched three “hypersonic ballistic missiles” at Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel in less than 24 hours.
Two of the missiles were launched on May 13, while the third was launched early on May 14. Sirens sounded across central Israel, as well as in the occupied West Bank amid all three attacks. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that all the missiles were intercepted.
No casualties or material losses were reported by Hebrew media. Nevertheless, operations at Ben Gurion were disturbed by the attacks.
In two separate statements, Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree said that the attacks on Ben Gurion were carried out “in support of the oppressed Palestinian people and their fighters,” as well as “in rejection of the genocide committed by the Zionist enemy against our brothers in the Gaza Strip.”
“The Yemeni Armed Forces reiterate that these operations are ongoing and will not cease until the aggression against Gaza stops and the siege is lifted,” the spokesman vowed in the second statement.
After the last missile attack, the IDF issued an “urgent” evacuation warning for three Houthi-controlled ports in the western Yemeni province of al-Hodeidah.
In a post to the X social network, the military’s Arabic-language spokesman Colonel Avichay Adraee warned Yemenis to keep away from the Ras Isa, Hodeida, and Salif ports until further notice.
“Due to the Houthi terror regime’s use of ports for its terror activities, we urge all those present at these ports to evacuate and stay away from them for your own safety until further notice,” he says.
The IDF issued an exact warning on May 11, just two days after the Houthis launched a ballistic missile and two suicide drones at targets in Israel, including Ben Gurion Airport. However, no strikes were reported after the warning, which led to doubts about Israel’s ability to fight the group 2,000 kilometers away from its border.
Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive in Gaza, the Houthis have launched some 33 ballistic missiles and at least 10 drones at Israel. Nearly all the missiles were intercepted. Still, a single hit on Ben Gurion on May 4 was enough to force many airlines to halt flights to the country.
