The Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen carried out another missile attack against Israel on June 28, the second in under 48 hours.
In a statement, Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said that a Zulfiqar ballistic missile was launched at a “sensitive target” near the southern city of Beersheba, adding that “the operation successfully achieved its goal, thanks be to Allah.”
The Zulfiqar is a single stage liquid-propellant missile with a detachable warhead. It is thought to be an improved copy of the Iranian-made Rezvan with a range of over 2,000 kilometers.
Sirens sounded in Beersheba, Dimona, Arad, and the surrounding area in southern Israel amid the missile attack. Later, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that attempts were made to shoot down the missile with air defenses, and they were apparently successful. No casualties or damage was reported.
Just two days earlier, the IDF said that a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis from Yemen at Israel malfunctioned and fell short.
Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree confirmed in his latest statement that the Houthis carried out multiple attacks with ballistic missiles and suicide drones against Israel over the past week, targeting Beersheba in addition to the central city of Tel Aviv and the northern city of Haifa. These attacks took place as Israel was trading strikes with Iran.
The Houthis have launched some 50 ballistic missiles and around a dozen suicide drones at Israel, since the IDF resumed its offensive in the Gaza Strip on March 18. The attacks created a sense of instability in Israel, with many airliners halting flights to the country.
In response, at least five waves of Israeli strikes targeted infrastructure in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in recent weeks, from the ports in al-Hodeidah, to cement factories, power stations and Sanaa International Airport in the Yemeni capital. The IDF also attempted to assassinate Houthi military chief of staff Muhammad al-Ghamari in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, but failed.
