Troops from the IDF’s 810th “Mountains” Regional Brigade, under the command of the 210th Division, continue to carry out targeted operations in southern Syria, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on July 6.
In one such operation, reserve forces from the 810th Brigade, together with Yahalom combat engineers, destroyed several outposts belonging to the former Syrian Arab Army in the Syrian buffer zone.
The IDF took over the buffer zone just hours after the fall of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad on December 8. It has since established nine strategic posts there, including two on top of Mount Hermon which oversees all of southern Syria up to the capital, Damascus.
According to the IDF, these outposts destroyed by the 810th Brigade posed a direct threat to Israeli military positions on Mount Hermon.
The brigade will continue to conduct proactive operations in southern Syria to protect “the security of Israeli citizens, and residents of the Golan Heights in particular,” the military said.
The IDF’s announcement came following reports of major advance in talks between Israel and Syria’s Islamist-led Interim Government, with a peace deal being within reach.
Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa is said to have agreed to give the country’s claim to the occupied Golan Heights, or at least two third of the region. However, Damascus appears to be keen on regaining control over the Syrian buffer zone.
The latest Israeli operations shows that Israel views the buffer zone as essential for the security of the Golan Heights, thus Syria will not likely be offered anything in return for peace.
