The Russian military began fielding a deeply modernized drone hunter version of the ZU-23-2 23 mm twin-barreled autocannon, which was developed by the Soviet Union in the 1950s.
On October 27, video footage of one such autocannon engaging several Ukrainian long-range, fixed-wing drones surfaced online. It is unclear when or where exactly the footage was taken, but it clearly shows the autocannon taking down at least four drones.
The autocannon is likely based on the same system shown to Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, during his recent visit to the Kapustin Yar test site.
The ZU-23-2 can engage aerial targets at ranges up to 2.5 kilometers and altitudes up to 1.5 kilometers. The twin-barreled autocannon has a rate of fire of up to 2,000 rounds per minute.
The latest upgrade turns the autocannon into a completely remotely-controlled system, with an electro-optical targeting system and the ability to receive data from an external fire control radar. The footage from the test attended by Medvedev in Kapustin Yar also indicates that multiple such autocannon can operate as a part of a single system to cover a wide area.
The Russian military began to test such anti-drone gun systems earlier this year, amid a notable increase in Ukrainian drone attacks.
Manually-controlled systems based on the GShG-7.62 mm four-barreled rotary machine gun and the KPV 14.5 mm-caliber heavy machine gun with artificial intelligence-aided electro-optical sights have shown promising results during tests in the Crimean Peninsula.
Another remotely-controlled, AI-aided system based on a 12,7 mm machine gun, most likely a Kord variant, is reportedly being tested by the Russian military, although not much is known about it yet.
Overall, these systems offer a cost-effective solution to protect a single object or a limited area, like a ship, building or an airfield, against drones. Together with missile-based air defense systems, and emerging drone interceptors they could form a more comprehensive air defense network.
