The Russian military has struck yet another vital bridge used as a supply route by Kiev forces in the direction of Donetsk.
Video footage showing the strike on the bridge, which is located near the settlement of Velyka Novosilka just a few kilometers away from the frontline, surfaced online on April 12. The bridge was reportedly targeted by a Su-34 fighter bomber of the Russian Aerospace Forces, using a Kh-38 missile. It sustained heavy damage as a result of the strike.
The Kh-38 has a range of 40 kilometers and carries a warhead weighing 250 kg. The basic version of the missile is guided via a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. Other versions with semi-active laser, active radar and imaging infrared seekers were developed.
The missile is also the base for the Kh-36 Grom-E1, a tactical cruise missile with a range of 120 kilometers, and the Kh-36 Grom-E2, a guided glide bomb with a range of 50 kilometers.
The Velyka Novosilka bridge was likely targeted by the laser-guided version of the missile, known as the Kh-38ML as it has the highest accuracy. An Orlan-30 reconnaissance drone, which is equipped with a laser designator, was apparently used to mark the bridge for the missile’s seeker.
The Russian military intensified strikes on vital bridges behind the front in the special military operation zone in recent months, hinding Ukraine’s ability to move troops, military equipment and supplies to the frontline.
