The Russian military has destroyed a launcher of one of Ukraine’s few Soviet-made S-300V1 long-range air defense systems in the Sumy direction.
At least one Geran-type fixed-wing suicide drone struck the a 9A83-1 transporter erector launcher and radar (TELR) vehicle close to the settlement of Vorozhba. The TELR was completely destroyed. Video footage of the strike surfaced online on August 10.
Prior to the start of the Russian special military operation, Kiev forces had around 100 S-300 systems in service, mostly from the P, PT and PS versions with only a few V1s. In the first few months of the operation, the country received a single S-300PMU battery from Slovakia.
Most of Ukraine’s S-300 systems have been destroyed, damaged or captured by the Russian military since the start of the special operation more than three years ago.
Russia is currently producing three versions of the Geran, which are said to be copies of the Iran’s Shahed-131, 136 and 238 suicide drones.
The Geran-1 and 2 are both pusher-propelled. The first has a range of 900 kilometers with a warhead weighing 15 kg, while the second has a range of 2,500 kilometers with a warhead weighing 50 kg. Meanwhile, the Geran-3, which is propelled by a turbojet engine, has a range of 2,500 kilometers and a warhead weighing up to 90 kg.
All three versions of the Geran are guided via the same GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system, which is highly resistant to jamming.
The Russian military expanded the use of Geran drones, employing them not just in deep strikes, but also in tactical frontline engagements. This shift came amid reports suggesting that the country could soon produce up to a thousand drones of this type a day.
