Large blasts rocked Erbil International Airport in near the capital of the autonomous region of Kurdistan in northern Iraq late on March 1, amid the American-Israeli attack on Iran.
Air defenses deployed at the military section of the airport, where United States forces are present, made several interceptions before the blasts. Later, Iranian state broadcaster Press TV reported that the airport was targeted with several drones and missiles.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which attacked targets in Kurdistan over the past day, didn’t claim responsibility, but the so-called Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI) released a statement around the same time announcing that it had carried out 23 operations with dozens of drones against “enemy bases” in Iraq and the region.
The umbrella group, which includes factions from the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) — recognized by the Iraqi government —, joined the war alongside Iran a day earlier.
In a statement released on the first day of the war, the IRI announced that it carried out 16 operations, also using dozens of drones.
Many commanders affiliated with the PMF and the IRI vowed to join the fight alongside Iran in the weeks leading to the war, thus actually joining in was not surprising, especially after Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — considered by many as a spiritual leader for Shia in the world — was killed in an American-Israeli strike.
Iraqi factions didn’t fire the first shot, however. On February 28, two strikes targeted Jurf Sakhar, an area to the southwest of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where the PMF maintains a strong presence. The strikes were attributed to Israel.
Later, a series of drone attacks began, with the government’s Security Media Cell reporting early on March 1 nine interceptions over Imam Ali Air Base in the province of Dhi Qar and other military sites in the province of Basra in the south of the country.
On the same day a strike targeted a site of the PMF’s 41st Brigade near the town of Miqdadiyah, northeast of Baghdad. In a statement released later, the mobilization force said that four of its troops were killed “”Israeli-American bombardment”.
The latest attack on Erbil International Airport was most likely carried out in response to this particular deadly strike. It was claimed by Ashab al-Kahf, a faction of the IRI.
The attack appeared to be extremely successful. Videos posted online suggest that air defenses were hit. An American MIM-104 Patriot long-range air defense system is known to be deployed there.
The IRI has become the first of Iran’s allies in the region to join the fight against the U.S. and Israel. It will not likely be the last, however.
Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, leader of Ansar Allah in Yemen, has already stated that his group is “ready for any development,” offering Iran support. Even Naim Qassem, the leader of Lebanese Hezbollah, said in a statement mourning Khamenei that the group is ready to “fulfill its duty”.
