Iran’s remaining nuclear scientists have been sent into hiding after over a dozen were killed by Israel during its 12-day war on the Islamic Republic, The Telegraph reported on August 9.
Israel started the war on June 13, stating that its goal was to cripple Iran’s nuclear program. The war ended when a ceasefire was suddenly announced on June 24, just two days after the United States joined the war by attacking three key nuclear sites in Iran.
Citing a senior Iranian official, the British daily said that 15 of the surviving researchers, among 100 on an Israeli kill list, are no longer living in their main homes or lecturing at universities amid fear of assassination.
The scientists were moved to secure villas in Tehran and along the country’s northern coast with their families, according to the official, who noted that those who were teaching at universities were “replaced with people who have no connection with the nuclear program.”
Israeli experts who spoke to The Telegraph said that scientists ready to take over the work of assassinated scientists are “dead men walking” despite the new security measures.
During the war, over a dozen Iranian nuclear scientists were assassinated by the Israeli military and intelligence. More than 30 of the Islamic Republic’s top military commanders were also killed.
Some 700 people suspected of working for Israel’s Mossad spy agency were arrested by Iranian security forces during the war.
At least few of the suspects have been already convicted and executed, including a nuclear scientist who was hanged last week for providing Mossad with information on another scientist who was assassinated during the war.
It is worth noting that Mossad rule in the war was not limited to assassinations. The agency’s special forces led a covert attack on Iranian air defenses and ballistic missiles, deploying suicide drones and guided missiles from within the territories of the Islamic Republic.
All in all, the war revealed some serious problems in Iran’s security apparatus. Some reforms are reportedly being made . However, a fundamental change is yet to be implemented.
