Iran Reports Another Attack On Operational Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant

An American-Israeli strike hit close to Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran on March 24 evening, IRNA reported.

The state-run news agency, citing Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, said that a projectile struck the area of the nuclear facility in the southern city of Bushehr. The agency described the attack as part of continued “hostile actions” by the U.S. and Israel.

Initial reports from Iran said that there were no casualties or damage from the strike, and all sections of the nuclear facility remain intact.

The attack was the second near the nuclear facility in recent days. A similar attack took place on March 17, without causing any casualties or damage.

Bushehr is the Islamic Republic’s only operating nuclear reactor. It was built by Russia, which is currently providing direct support to its operations. Some 400 exports from the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom are reported to be working at the facility.

Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom, announced just a day earlier that “several waves of evacuation” for Russian experts from Bushehr were being planned.

“We reported that we are preparing several waves of evacuation, with the first ones set to begin as early as this week. We plan to leave a few dozen people literally at the site for supervision, to maintain equipment integrity, and to be ready for proper reloading,” Likhachev said at a press briefing in Moscow following his talks with the United Nations nuclear watchdog head over the phone.

Rosatom plans to leave only a few dozen people at Bushehr, Likhachev said, adding that he had informed International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi about the tense and complex but manageable situation at the facility.

“Our task—and we informed them about this and even asked the IAEA to engage on this issue—is to now sound the alarm. It is unacceptable to allow any risk to the operating plant, the plant under construction, or the personnel, regardless of nationality,” he said.

Likhachev also warned strikes near the nuclear power plant cannot be allowed because “there is too large a volume of fissile materials both in the reactor, in the cooling pools, and in the storage facilities.”

“This would, I repeat, be a regional-scale catastrophe from which no one would emerge unscathed,” he pointed out. “Regardless of political sympathy or antipathy, regardless of whose side anyone is on. The entire region would suffer severely,” he said.

The latest strike was likely meant to provoke some response from Iran. It is possible that Israel was behind it in an attempt to sabotage U.S. efforts to launch talks with the Islamic Republic. Iranian officials have repeatedly warned since the start of the war that they will not tolerate attacks on energy facilities.

the trumpster apparently wants an off ramp yet the isreali apartheid regime are keeping his foot on the gas. this attack on iran will see the end of the trumpster’s tenure. after their recent performance overseeing iran’s nuclear sites and then handing this info to mossad, i’m probably safe in saying that the iaea can no longer be trusted to do the job it was originally designed for. as with ngo’s, the ranks have been compromised.
