Iranian air defenses shot down on April 3 a fighter jet of the United States Air Force, and shared photos showing some of the wreckage.
Initially, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) announced that it had shot down an F-35 Lightning II over the central region of the Islamic Republic, but the wreckage photos revealed that the fighter jet was in fact an F-15E Strike Eagle, specifically from the U.S. Air Force’s 48th Fighter Wing based at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom.
The photos released by Iranian state media shows parts of the fighter jet’s wings, vertical and horizontal stabilizers, as well as electronic parts.
One photo also shows a large charred crater on the ground, possibly the result of a strike that targeted the wreckage when the fighter jet first crashed.
The U.S. Central Command has not yet commented on the incident, and the fate of the fighter jet’s pilot and weapon systems officers remain unclear.
The F-15E was developed to carry out long-range precision ground attacks while retaining strong air-to-air capability, with a top speed over Mach 2.5 and a large weapons payload. A single fighter jet of this type could cost upwards of $90 million.
The U.S. Air Force has already acknowledged losing three F-15Es during the ongoing war on Iran, but these fell as a result of Kuwaiti friendly fire on March 2.
In addition, Iran released footage on March 21 showing an F-15 fighter jet getting hit with an anti-aircraft missile over its southern region.
Iran appears to be successfully restoring the upper tier of its air defense network. The U.S. and even Israel will likely take more aerial losses.
