The Iranian military announced on March 7 that it had shot down at least 13 American and Israeli drones over the past day.
In a statement, the military drones, which include American-made MQ-9 Reapers and Israeli-made Hermes 900s, were shot down by the anti-aircraft missiles and guns of its ground forces and air defense units and those of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, operating under the command of the Joint National Air Defense Headquarters.
The e drones were shot down over different areas in the northwestern and western regions of the Islamic Republic, as well as over the southern region and the provinces of Isfahan, Kerman, and Tehran.
According to the military, a total of 82 drones have been shot down since the start of the American-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic a week earlier.
Videos released by the military a day earlier showed the successful interception of three MQ-9s, one Hermes-900 and two Israeli-made Eitan combat drones.
The MQ-9, developed by General Atomics, is primarily used to collect intelligence, but has the ability to conduct pinpoint strikes. The drone can operate for more than 27 hours and reach altitudes of over 25,000 feet. It costs upwards of $30 million.
The Hermes 900 costs as much. It has an endurance of over 30 hours and a maximum altitude of 30,000 feet. The drone was designed by Elbit to carry out reconnaissance, surveillance, communications relay and attack missions.
The larger Eitan, also known as the Heron TP, has endurance of over 30 hours and a service ceiling of up to 45,000 feet. It was designed by Israel’s IAI for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance missions. The drone is also reported to be capable of holding armed roles. The drone could cost as much as $45 million.
Based on visually verified aerial losses as of March 6, Israel has lost six Hermes-900, three Eitan, and one Israeli Heron drones since the start of the war.
The Heron is a smaller version of the Eitan, designed to carry out similar missions, with an endurance of 52 hours and a service ceiling of 32,000 feet. It costs around ten million.

While the U.S. and Israel have largely succeeded in neutralizing the upper tiers of Iran’s air defense network, the Islamic Republic’s short-range air defense systems are still active. By using these systems, Iran is hindering the reconnaissance capabilities of its enemies, and increase the cost of the war in a notable manner.
