Over the night of March 5 and 6, Iran launched one of its largest attacks so far against Kuwait, targeting Ali Al Salem Air Base which houses United States forces.
Ali Al Salem is considered one of the key airlift and logistics gateways for the U.S. military in the Middle East, hosting the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing. The air base is located in central Kuwait, roughly 15 kilometers west of the city of Al Jahra and approximately 37 kilometers from the border with Iraq.
Since the start of the American-Israeli war on Iran, the Islamic Republic has launched hundreds of missiles and drones at military facilities housing or supporting U.S. forces in neighboring countries. In Kuwait, Ali Al Salem was very much the main target.
The latest attack was, however, the largest so far, with videos posted online showing a massive fire at the air base after reports of multiple impacts.
Previous attacks had already caused significant damage to Ali Al Salem. Satellite images from Planet Labs released recently by the Institute for the Study of War revealed that multiple aircraft shelters and hangars at the air base were hit by Iranian strikes.
Other satellite images from Sentinel-2 and MizarVision show large fires at the air base earlier in the week, with more than 20 impacts.
Some of the impacts are in a section of the air base where an American-made MIM-104 Patriot long-range air defense system is known to be deployed.

More recent satellite images published by Iranian media also revealed that multiple domes at Ali Al Salem, possibly housing radars or satellite communication systems, were wiped out.

The targets of the latest attack were reportedly fuel and ammunition depots, which explains the massive fire seen in videos that came up later.
The U.S. has taken some of its worst losses in Kuwait since the start of the war. Three F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets were shot down in a friendly-fire incident close to Ali Al Salem, and six troops were killed in an Iranian strike that hit a fortified tactical operations center at the port of Shuaiba.
In a sign of the worsening security situation in Kuwait, the U.S. announced on March 5 that it was closing its embassy in the country, with following reports suggesting that all the staff will be evacuated.
The next day a Reuters report revealed that Kuwait began cutting production at some oil fields, possibly because it could no longer export. The decision came after the empty Bahamas-flagged tanker Sonangol Namibe was struck by an Iranian drone boat close to the country’s Mubarak Al-Kabeer, causing hull damage and a ballast leak but resulting in no crew injuries or major oil spill.
Iran has clearly dealt a large blow to Kuwait, and it can be even assessed that the U.S. military was pushed, or about to be pushed out from the country.
