Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) unveiled on May 8 an underground drone base belonging to its naval forces.
The base, located in the southern province of Hormozgan along the shores of the Persian Gulf, is one of many built by Iran in recent years in a bid to improve its defenses.
In video footage released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, IRGC commander Major General Hossein Salami and the guard’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri are seen touring the base, which houses hundreds of drones.
The footage showed Ababil 3 and 5 combat drones, Bavar-5 loitering munitions, as well as Sadegh reconnaissance drones.
It also included high-resolution imagery of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier and other vessels of the United States Navy in the Persian Gulf, which were recently taken by Mohajer-6 combat drones. The drone monitored the vessels for ten consecutive hours, according to the state broadcaster.
In the footage, Salami described the unveiling of the underground as both a defensive measure and a psychological tool to recalibrate adversaries’ perceptions.
“Another dimension of displaying our power is to correct the enemies’ miscalculations,” the IRGC commander said. “Any location from which aggression originates will become the target of our counterattack.”
Salami assured Iranians of the country’s military capabilities to counter any threat. “Our dear nation should know that we stand with our hands full against our enemies,” he stated.
“What the dear Iranian nation is witnessing today is a small part of the IRGC Navy’s enormous drone capability,” the commander said. “The drones at the disposal of this force are the most modern and advanced drone technologies in the world, giving our commanders a free hand for various types of strikes and providing flexibility in planning.”
The unveiling came amid rising tension with Israel, whose prime minister vowed following a missile attack by the Houthis on Ben Gurion Airport at the start of the week to respond against both the Yemeni group and Iran. The Israeli threat contradicted the approach being followed by the U.S. which is currently engaged in indirect nuclear talks with Iran.
Speaking on separate occasions earlier in the week, Salami said that U.S. officials should be wary of Israeli attempts to drag Washington into an unending war with Iran.
