Isolating the Battlefield: Russia’s Relentless Strikes on Kherson’s Vital Supply Route Continue

Russian Aerospace Forces have launched another wave of strikes on the bridge connecting Kherson’s Korabelny Island to the city, intensifying efforts to isolate Ukrainian military positions in the southern direction. Despite previous bombardments, the bridge was heavily damaged but remained standing after initial hits, though a massive hole was blown through its roadway. LINK Russian military sources claim that while the structure was damaged, traffic, albeit cautious, continued. However, overnight strikes aimed to finish the job, with the extent of the new damage still unclear.

The bridge serves as the sole supply route for Ukrainian forces entrenched on Korabelny Island, and its destruction would severely disrupt logistics, forcing Kyiv to rely on boats, making them easy targets for Russian drone operators. Pro-Russian military channels suggest that a few more precision strikes could collapse the damaged span entirely, cutting off the island.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities have begun evacuating residents from Korabelny Island following the attacks. Civilians are being relocated to the mainland before being transported further inland. The broader city of Kherson is also experiencing evacuations due to prolonged blackouts and gas shortages caused by prolonged fighting. While many have already left, some residents remain, awaiting the return of Russian forces.

The island itself has become a fortified Ukrainian military stronghold, with drone operators and spotters positioned on rooftops, mobile mortar teams firing from schoolyards, and military equipment hidden in shipyard buildings. Evacuation of civilians is seemed as both a safety measure for civilians and a tactical necessity, allowing Ukrainian forces to operate more freely.

In addition to the bridge strikes, Russian warplanes conducted further bombings on the island using precision-guided munitions, while artillery from the 18th Army of the Dnepr Group targeted Ukrainian troop concentrations on the western bank of the Dnieper River.

Russian strikes on strategic infrastructure on the western bank of the Dnieper after years of war may signal the upcoming escalation on the Kherson frontlines. Depleted Ukrainian military can no longer effectively resist on the Donbass front, sending reinforcement from less active directions, like Kherson. As a result Ukrainian defense was stretched and weakened in the south. The Russian army may intensify offensive operations on the Dnieper islansd and even try to cross the river to launch new offensive in the Kherson region.
