The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on October 29 acknowledged losing a reservist as a result of an attack in the Gaza Strip a day earlier after killing over a hundred Palestinian in intense retaliatory strikes on the enclave.
The attack took place amid a ceasefire that began earlier this month as a part of a United States-led peace plan meant to end the war.
The slain reservist was a heavy machinery operator in the Gaza Division. According to an initial IDF probe, Palestinian snipers fired at a building used by troops and at an excavator operating in Jenina neighborhood of Rafah area in southern Gaza which resulted in the death of the reservist who was operating the excavator.
Other Palestinian fighters later fired several rocket-propelled grenades at troops, hitting an armored vehicle in the area. There were no additional casualties, however.
The military wing of Hamas denied responsibility for the attack. Still, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the IDF to carry out “powerful strikes” in Gaza, holding the group responsible. Meanwhile, Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened the leaders of Hamas abroad.
“Dozens of Hamas commanders were eliminated in a powerful IDF operation since yesterday in response to the attack on IDF soldiers and the blatant violation of the agreement to return the fallen hostages, in addition to strikes on dozens of infrastructure targets,” Katz said in a statement as the ceasefire took effect again.
“There is and will be no immunity for anyone in the leadership of the Hamas terror organization, neither for those wearing suits nor for those hiding in tunnels. Anyone who raises a hand against IDF soldiers, his hand will be severed,” he added.
The IDF began launching strikes in Gaza right after the deadly attack, and later announced that it had targeted over 30 commanders in Hamas and other groups in the Strip.
“In accordance with the directive of the political echelon, and following a series of strikes, in which dozens of terror targets and terrorists were struck, the IDF has begun the renewed enforcement of the ceasefire after Hamas violated it,” the military said in a statement.
“The IDF will continue to uphold the ceasefire agreement and will respond firmly to any violation of it,” it added.
The Hamas-led health ministry later reported that Israeli strikes across Gaza killed at least 104 Palestinians, including 46 children, and wounded at least 253 others.
Last week, two soldiers were killed in a similar attack in the same neighborhood of Rafah. Hamas also denied responsibility, but the IDF launched strikes.
Tensions have been mounting in Gaza for a few days, with the main issue being a delay in the recovery of the bodies of remaining Israeli hostages. At least 13 are yet to be handed back to Israel by Hamas.
Israel claims that Hamas knows the location of the vast majority, or even all, of the remaining bodies of hostages, and is purposely stalling and staging fake discoveries of bodies.
Despite all of these issues, the ceasefire will likely hold up for a while. A return to fighting in Gaza seems highly unlikely for now. However, this could happen once all the bodies of the hostages are returned to Israel, that is if Hamas refuses to disarm. The U.S. peace plan calls for full disarmament. The group is yet to officially accept this. Meanwhile, efforts to find an alternative authority for the Strip are yet to move forward.
