The Israeli Air Force (IAF) and Hellenic Air Force (HAF) wrapped up a joint aerial refueling drill, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on November 5.
During the drill, which took place on November 3, the IAF’s 120th Squadron practiced aerial refueling of dozens of HAF fighter jets.
“The exercise simulated an operational flight and the refueling of fighter jets over long distances. For several hours, the fighter jets joined the refueling aircraft and were refueled by them to continue their missions,” the IDF said in a statement.
“This exercise is part of the annual training program and reflects the ongoing regional cooperation between the two countries,” it added.
The IAF and HAF conduct joint exercises on a regular basis, but the latest drills highlight the growing military cooperation between Israel and Greece.
While this cooperation is nothing new, in recent months it has begun to take the shape of a military alliance against Turkey.
Ankara has been challenging Greece in the eastern Mediterranean Sea for the deceased. In no other area this is more clear than in Cyprus.
The fall of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria last year boosted Ankara’s stance in the region, as it was its allies who claimed power. Both Israel and Greece are now reacting.
In September, tensions flared up with Turkey over the delivery of Israeli-made Barak MX integrated air defense systems to Southern Cyprus. Following the delivery of the systems, Turkish defense officials warned that Southern Cyprus’s ongoing armament efforts would threaten peace and stability on the island and may lead to “dangerous consequences.”
Before losing elections in October, President of Northern Cyprus Ersin Tatar, a hardcore supporter of Ankara, warned of growing Israeli influence in the south of the island
The victory of Tufan Erhürman of the Republican Turkish Party was seen as somewhat of a blow to Turkey. Erhürman pledged close coordination with Ankara on foreign policy. However, he is known to be a moderate advocating for a binational federation and renewed talks with Greek Cypriots.
Greece may be planning to pressure Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean with help from Israel starting from Cyprus. From its side, Israel likely sees its growing influence n Cyprus as a way to contain Turkey’s emerging presence in Syria. Tensions could escalate, but clearly none of the sides is interested in a confrontation.
