A wave of Israeli strikes hit Syria over the night of September 8 and 9, with later reports saying that missiles and air defense systems supplied recently by Turkey were targeted.
The strikes hit three military sites: the air defense academy near the town of Maskanah in the southern Homs countryside, an air defense storage complex near the town of Sqoubin in the eastern countryside of Latakia and an unidentified base near the ancient city of Palmyra in the eastern countryside of Homs.
Videos posted to social networks showed large fires with secondary explosions near Maskanah and Squoubin. However, there were no reports of casualties in any of the three targeted sites.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli strikes as “a blatant infringement” of its sovereignty and regional stability, saying in a statement published by the official Syrian Arab News Agency that they were part of an ongoing series of “escalations” pursued by Israel against Syrian territory.
Later, Al-Arabiya reported, citing an Israeli security source, that the strikes targeted Turkish-made missiles and air defenses which were recently delivered to Syria.
“The strikes targeted warehouses for Turkish-made missiles and air defense equipment in the city [of Homs], after they had been recently transferred to the targeted area,” the Saudi-owned news channel quotes the unnamed source as saying. “Turkey is trying to harass us and drag us into a military confrontation, which we do not fear, but do not want.”
The source noted that “Israel is negotiating with the Syrian leadership regarding security arrangements, but will not hesitate to use force when necessary.”
It added that “the internal situation in Syria is fragile,” and that “Israel insists on the demilitarization of southern Syria,” stressing that “Tel Aviv will strike any threat to its security, regardless of its source or location.”
Israel escalated its military operations following the fall of the Assad regime last December, invading the buffer zone adjacent to the occupied Golan Heights and launching hundreds of strikes to destroy the country’s military capabilities. At the time, it engaged in talks with Syria.
Last month, Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani met with Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer in France to discuss a possible security agreement. However, after the meeting Israeli special forces conducted a raid near the Syrian capital, Damascus. Turkish spying equipment were reportedly seized during the raid.
The latest strikes also come following a report by Israel’s Kan public broadcaster of an upcoming meeting between al-Shibai and Dermer this week.
Israel is clearly trying to up the pressure on Syria ahead of the next round of talks. While Israel appears to be interested in a security agreement, its recent military operations also indicate that it wants to end, or at least limit the scale of the alliance between Syria and Turkey.
