The Israeli Navy recently conducted a successful test of an LRAD interceptor missile, part of the Barak MX air defense system, launched from a Sa’ar 6-class corvette, the Israeli Defense Forces announced on August 2.

In a statement, the military said that the test included a “precision rocket fired at a target representing a strategic asset at sea.”

The Barak MX system identified the target and shot it down with an LRAD interceptor missile, according to the Israeli Navy.

The Barak MX is the latest version of the Barak 8 air defense system which was jointly developed by Israel and India to defend against airborne threats including fighter jets, helicopters and drones as well as anti-ship, ballistic and cruise missiles.

The exact range of the new LRAD missile is unknown, but it can reportedly intercept targets at altitudes up to 20 kilometers.

The three Sa’ar 5-class and three Sa’ar 6-class corvettes currently in service with the Israeli Navy can all launch Barak 8 missiles.

The test of the new interceptor came as Israel is preparing for a possible response to its recent strikes on the Houthi-held Yemeni Red Sea port of al-Hodeida, the assassinations of Hezbollah’s military chief Fuad Shukr in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and Hamas’s leader Ismail Haniyeh in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Recent Arab media reports speculated that Iran and its allies could target key Israeli ports or even the country’s off-shore gas and oil rigs.
