On May 24, a unit of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a raid in the town of al-Samadaniya al-Sharqiyah in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Qunitra.
The unit, made up of several light vehicles led by two armored personnel carriers, entered the town and conducted a series of raids, Daraa 24, a news blog based in the southern region reported, adding that Israeli troops also arrested two people before withdrawing.
The IDF invaded the buffer zone adjacent to the Golan Heights in al-Quneitra just hours after the fall of the Assad regime last December. It established nine strategic posts there. The military also launched hundreds of strikes against the country, destroying nearly all of the SAA’s combat capabilities.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in February that southern Syria must be completely demilitarized, warning that Israel would not accept the presence of the forces of the country’s new Islamist-led interim government close to its territory.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the IDF carried out a total of 12 raids in the buffer zone and beyond over the past week.
Despite the escalation, Israel and Syria’s Interim Government are reported to be engaged in direct talks on several levels, with the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan playing the role of mediators.
Recent reports even revealed that Damascus made gestures of goodwill to Israel, that included handing over the archive of an Israeli spy executed in Syria more than 60 years ago and the remains of a soldier killed in a battle in Lebanon in the 1980s.
It’s worth noting that United States President Donald Trump asked Syria’s Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa during a meeting in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, earlier this month to make peace with Israel. Ahead of the meeting, Trump promised to leave all sanctions off the war-torn country.
Hebrew media said that Israel views Trump’s lifting of sanctions on Syria as favorably, albeit while maintaining a high level of caution towards Sharaa.
Israel will not likely accept any peace agreement that wont recognize its complete control over the Golan Heights, internationally recognized as Syrian territories. Netanyahu could even demand permanent control over the recent buffer zone. Sharaa may accept these demands.
