The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on April 6 that it destroyed dozens of Iranian aircraft during strikes on three airports close to the capital, Tehran, overnight.
In a statement, the military said that strikes were aimed at causing a blow to the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force.
Dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets hit Iranian planes and helicopters, as well as infrastructure “used by the regime’s armed forces for military purposes” at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport and two smaller airstrips in the area, Behram and Azmayesh.
The IDF claimed that Mehrabad served the Quds Force, the extraterritorial branch of the IRGC, and was a central hub for arming and funding Iran’s “terrorist operatives” in the Middle East.
“The concluded strikes further deepen the damage to the aerial capabilities of the Iranian terror regime,” the military added.
Videos released by the IDF show the destruction of just two Soviet or Russian-made Mi-8/17 military transport helicopters.
Mehrabad includes the 1st Tactical Air Base, which hosts the 11 Tactical Fighter Squadron of the IRIAF. The squadron operates a number of Soviet-made MiG-29A/UB fighter jets. It is unclear, however, if any of these jets were targeted in the IDF’s latest attack.
The air base also hosts the 11 Tactical Airlift Squadron, which operates American-made C-130E/H military transport planes. Two were reported targeted during the overnight strikes.
The attack was among the largest to target the IRIAF and the IRGC Aerospace Force since the start of the American-Israeli war more than a month ago. It was likely a response to recent American aerial losses. In the last three days, the U.S. lost two A-10C Thunderbolt II attack jets, one F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet, two MC-130J Commando II special mission transport planes and four MH-6 Little Bird light helicopters.
It is also possible that the attack was an attempt by Israel to sabotage ongoing diplomatic efforts to bring the ongoing war to an end.
