A wave of Israeli strikes hit areas controlled by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen on September 10, in what was described by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) as the “longest” operation against the country so far.
The IDF said in a statement that the strikes targeted military camps where Houthi operatives were gathered, the headquarters of the group’s “propaganda division,” and a fuel depot, in both the capital, Sanaa, and in the northeastern province of al-Jawf.
Yemen’s Al-Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, said that the strikes hit a medical center in al-Sitteen Street southwest of Sana’a, as well as a government complex in the district of al-Hazm in al-Jawf.
According to the IDF, the Houthis’ propaganda division “is responsible for spreading incitement and propaganda messages in the media, including speeches by the leader Abdul-Malik [al-Houthi] and statements by spokesman Yahya Saree.”
“During the war, the headquarters has spearheaded the regime’s propaganda and psychological terror efforts,” the military said.
The Houthi camps that were struck were used by the group to “plan and execute terror attacks against the IDF and the State of Israel. The camps also contained operations and intelligence command centers used by the regime,” it added.
The IDF noted that the attack marked the longest flight carried out by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) since the beginning of the war, with fighter jets flying over 2,350 kilometers to the targets.
The strikes involved over ten IAF fighter jets dropping some 30 munitions on 15 targets in Sanaa and in the al-Jawf area north of the capital, the military said, adding that enroute to carrying out the strike and on the way back to Israel, several aerial refuelings were carried out.
During the attack, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said that the group air defenses engaged Israeli fighter jets. He later reported civilian casualties.
“The Yemeni Armed Forces deny the Israeli enemy’s allegations of targeting missile launchers, and affirm that the strikes hit purely civilian targets, including the newspapers ‘26 September’ and ‘Al-Yaman.’ Journalists, both male and female, as well as civilians and bystanders, were killed and wounded,” the spokesman said.
“The Armed Forces affirm that this brutal aggression will not go unpunished,” he added.
Later, the Houthi-run health ministry said that nine people were killed and over 118 others were wounded as a result of the Israeli strikes.
Commenting on the deadly attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that the IDF “will continue to strike” the Houthis in Yemen.
“A few days ago, we eliminated most members of the Houthis’ terror government,” said Netanyahu at a cornerstone-laying ceremony for a new promenade in Bat Yam named after United States President Donald Trump. “In response, the Houthis fired two days ago at Ramon Airport.”
“This did not weaken our resolve,” the primer continued. “Today, we struck them again from the air, hitting their terror facilities, terror bases with many terrorists, and additional sites as well.”
“We will continue to strike,” Netanyahu promises. “Whoever strikes us, whoever attacks us — we will reach them,” he added.
In the few days leading to the strikes, the Houthis intensified their missile and drone attacks on Israel. On September 7, a drone launched by the group from Yemen hit Ramon International Airport in the south of the country, lightly wounding a man.
Since March 18, when the IDF resumed its offensive in the Gaza Strip, the Houthis have launched 81 ballistic missiles and at least 35 suicide drones at Israel.
Including the latest strikes, Israel has so far launched 17 attacks against Yemen. The Houthis were not deterred before, even when the prime minister of the group and several of his cabinet members were killed last month. More escalation by the group is to be expected.
