Yasser Abu Shabab, an Israeli collaborator and the leader of the largest anti-Hamas militia in the Gaza Strip, was reportedly killed on December 4.
Hebrew media provided conflicting reports on how Abu Shabab was killed. Some reports said that he was killed in an ambush, while others claimed he was shot by a member of his own militia or during an internal clan scuffle.
He was said to have been killed in the area of Rafah in the southern part of Gaza, which is currently occupied by the Israeli military.
Initially, it was reported that Abu Shabab was evacuated by the Israeli military to Soroka Medical Center in the city of Beersheba in southern Israel. However, the hospital later clarified that he had neither been evacuated to Soroka nor had he died there.
Amit Segal, Israeli journalist and political commentator of Channel 12, described the death of the anti-Hamas leader as a “bad development for Israel”.
Abu Shabab, a trafficker who escaped from a Hamas jail during the war, was the founder of the anti-Hamas Popular Forces. The militia first emerged in the eastern part of the area of Rafah in May of last year, and has since been accused of having links to ISIS, looting aid convoys and operating in coordination with the Israeli military.
In recent months, Hamas’s military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, claimed to have deterred the Abu Shabab’s Popular Forces.
After the start of the ceasefire in Gaza in October the al-Qassam Brigades and the Hamas-run Palestinian Press Agency, claimed that they arrested “a number of militia members and confiscated military equipment and tools” used by the militia. Public executions of people accused of collaborating with Israel were also carried out in the Strip at the time.
It’s worth noting that the Popular Forces is not the only anti-Hamas military that is currently operating in southern Gaza. Another militia, the Strike Force Against Terror, was formed earlier this year in the town of Kizan al-Najjar close to the city of Khan Younis by Hossam al-Astal, a former officer of the Palestinian Authority.
Just like Abu Shabab, al-Astal was imprisoned by Hamas in the past, with Palestinian media reports suggesting that he was charged with treason.
In an interview with The Times of Israel from September, al-Astal was very open about his relations with Israel, and even admitted that he was receiving supplies from the country.
The death of Abu Shabab was nothing short of a blow to Israel. On one hand, it will deter many others in Gaza from collaborating with Israeli military and intelligence. On the other hand, it will complicate any Israeli plans to overthrow Hamas rule in the Strip outside the framework of the United States-propelled peace plan currently in place.
Although Hamas involvement in the killing of Abu Shabab remains uncertain, the incident highlights the fragility of those opposed to the group in Gaza.
