Jaysh al-Izza announced on June 16 that its fighters had targeted a “Russian base” near the town of al-Kabariyah in northern Hama with a salvo of rockets, despite the ongoing ceasefire.
The radical group released a video showing its fighters launching at least three Grad 122mm rockets at the supposed Russian base.
Military sources told SouthFront that some Russian advisors may be deployed near al-Kabariyah. However, there is no “Russian base” in the town or in its outskirt.
Jaysh al-Izza, which is led by Maj. Jamil al-Saleh, has around 1,500 fighters stationed in the northern and northwestern parts of Hama. The group is known for being a close ally of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria.
Earlier this month, Jaysh al-Izza suffered from a major blow when the Syrian military killed one of its most prominent commanders, Abdul Baset al-Sarout, who was also a public figure of the Syrian opposition.
