Kiev Forces Take Heavy Losses As They Counterattack In Zaporozhye (Videos)

On February 13, the Russian military’s Vostok [East] Group of Forces repelled at least nine Ukrainian counterattacks by Kiev forces in Zaporozhye.

Kiev forces attempted to advance near Ternovatoe, Kosovtsev, and Priluki, but took heavy losses and were eventually pushed back by Russian troops. Fierce fighting is still taking place near the three settlements, which are all located along the Haichur River.

Reports of Ukrainian advances in Nechayevka, Novo Zaporizhia, Rybnoe, and Sladkoe were also denied by Russian media. These settlements are also located on the Haichur. The situation there is said to be under the complete control of the Vostok Group of Forces.

Ukrainian losses from the failed counterattacks reportedly amounted to two companies of troops, in addition to 17 pieces of equipment, including two armored personnel carriers and five armored combat vehicles.

It’s worth noting that most of these Ukrainian losses were attributed to the drone units of the Vostok Group of Forces, which became way more active recently.

In recent weeks, Kiev forces brought in large reinforcements, including several assault formations and foreign mercenary groups, to Zaporozhye to stop the advance of the Russian military. The latest wave of counterattacks was the most serious in several months.

While repelling the counterattacks, the Vostok Group of Forces struck Ukrainian reinforcement groups near Alexandroka, Rizdvyanka, and Verkhnyaya Tersa.

Despite facing pressure along the Haichur, Russian troops are reportedly still working to expand their control to the west of the key city of Huliapole. Zaliznychne, a key defense node, was captured earlier in the week, and work is ongoing to secure the railway stretching south of it.

The latest losses will not likely deter Kiev forces, which will likely launch more counterattacks, even possibly larger ones, in Zaporozhye in coming days.

While this tactic could allow Ukraine to slow down the advance of the Russian military, it is depleting its own forces, which are already facing a serious shortage in manpower. If the Vostok Group of Forces continues to hold the line, the situation could backfire very badly for Kiev forces.
