The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) announced on February 2 that their forces had captured six foreign ISIS fighters during a special operation in the middle Euphrates River Valley.
“Along with heavy fighting by our units within the Syrian Democratic Forces [SDF] against ISIS terrorists, security operations are constantly being carried out in order to ensure safety in the areas liberated. 6 foreign jihadists of various nationalities who had been actively participated in terrorist activities of the group for years were captured alive in an operation,” an official statement by the YPG reads.
The detained terrorists were identified as:
- Dmitry Simonov “Abu Isa al-Rusi,” from Russia;
- Mahmoud Se’id Ateb “Abu Mushab al-Almani,” from Germany;
- Nicholas Joseph Lee “Abu Yousuf al-Amriki,” from an unspecified country in Latin America;
- Emrah Rıfat Ozanoğlu “Abu Fatima al-Turki,” from Turkey;
- Abrar Mohammad “Abu Zubair al-Sweidi,” from Sweden;
- Hisham al-Arabi “Abu Maryam al-Maghribi,” from Morocco.

Earlier, a Department of Defense spokesman told CNN that the number of foreign ISIS fighters detained by the SDF has exceeded 800. The number is expected to raise in the upcoming few weeks.
The fate of detained ISIS fighters in Syria remains uncertain, as their countries don’t want to take them back, and the SDF can’t charge them in its illegal courts.
